Energy resources have defned the southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA) region, the 32-county region surrounding the city of Pittsburgh, stretching across western Maryland, eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, and the northern panhandle and north-central regions of West Virginia. Te region’s abundant coal resources fueled the U.S. steel industry for many decades; oil was frst produced commercially there, and the region gave birth to the U.S. oil industry. Natural gas, frst used to evaporate water to produce salt, is once again remaking the area. Yet, the energy industry is broader than these three fossil resources. It includes frms that design and manufacture the specialized equipment used to seek, extract, and proftably use these resources. Te energy industry also includes nuclear, wind, and solar energy and the technologies to integrate them, such as power electronics and automatic controls that conserve energy. A workforce has developed in SWPA to support these industries.
