1.1 This test method covers the determination of the linear thermal expansion of rigid solid materials using push-rod dilatometers. This method is applicable over any practical temperature range where a device can be constructed to satisfy the performance requirements set forth in this standard. Note 1: Initially, this method was developed for vitreous silica dilatometers operating over a temperature range of –180°C to 900°C. The concepts and principles have been amply documented in the literature to be equally applicable for operating at higher temperatures. The precision and bias of these systems is believed to be of the same order as that for silica systems up to 900°C. However, their precision and bias have not yet been established over the relevant total range of temperature due to the lack of well-characterized reference materials and the need for interlaboratory comparisons. 1.2 For this purpose, a rigid solid is defined as a material that, at test temperature and under the stresses imposed by instrumentation, has a negligible creep or elastic strain rate, or both, thus insignificantly affecting the precision of thermal-length change measurements. This includes, as examples, metals, ceramics, refractories, glasses, rocks and minerals, graphites, plastics, cements, cured mortars, woods, and a variety of composites. 1.3 The precision of this comparative test method is higher than that of other push-rod dilatometry techniques (for example, Test Method D696) and thermomechanical analysis (for example, Test Method E831) but is significantly lower than that of absolute methods such as interferometry (for example, Test Method E289). It is generally applicable to materials having absolute linear expansion coefficients exceeding 0.5 μm/(m·°C) for a 1000°C range, and under special circumstances can be used for lower expansion materials when special precautions are used to ensure that...

STRESS ANALYSIS FOR AN INFINITE STRIP WEAKNED BY PERIODIC CRACKS
Stress analysis for an infinite strip weakened by periodic cracks is studied. The cracks were assumed in a horizontal position, and the strip was applied by tension "p" in y-direction. The boundary value problem can be reduced into a complex mixed one. It is found that the EEVM ( eigenfunction expansion variational method) is efficient to solve the problem. The stress intensity factor at the crack tip and the T-stress were evaluated. From the deformation response under tension the cracked strip can be equivalent to an orthotropic strip without cracks. The elastic properties in the equivalent orthotropic strip were also investigated. Finally, numerical examples and results were given....

Water-conserving Potential for Agriculture in the Tarim Basin
To satisfy the water demand for Tarim Basin's economic development in the year 2000, about 33.4×108 m3 water needs to be further tapped. Acco rding t o the analysis of the current status of water utilization, it is pointed out th at, to achieve such economic objectives, the policy of emphasizing both water ex ploitation and water conservation with the preference given to conservation meas ures must be followed. For this end, the potentials of exploring new additional sources and strengthening water conservation have been well analyzed, along with the calculation and tech-economic-assessment of some related parameters like the canal transmission efficiency in water delivery systems and the water irrigation effi ciency in the field. The results indicate the potentials of water resource expan sion and conservation are 34×108 m3 and 57×108 m3, respectively. STOCHASTIC ANALYSIS OF WATER FLOW IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA
A stochastic model for saturated-unsaturated flow is developed based on the combination of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion of the input random soil properties with a perturbation method. The saturated hydraulic conductivity ks(x) is assumed to be log-normal random functions, expressed by f(x). f(x) is decomposed as infinite series in a set of orthogonal normal random variables by the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) expansion and the pressure head is expand as polynomial chaos with the same set of orthogonal random variables. With these expansions, the stochastic saturated-unsaturated flow equation and the corresponding initial and boundary conditions are represented by a series of deterministic partial differential equations which can be solved subsequently by a suitable numerical method.
